For one of their summer field trips, the Covington Club went to the skating rink on June 24 for a fun-filled day!

“We went to the skating ring for a field trip. It was fun when I got the hang of it. When we first got there, we all had to take our shoes off and put on the skates. When I first stood up in those skates, I almost did a split. That was scary and funny.”

Antreneeka, 9

On June 15, Covington boys and girls went bowling, and they loved it!

“I like bowling with the Boys & Girls Club. I bowled and I made a strike. And then I made three more and I won the game. I had 117 points. I like going to the bowling alley.”

Walgreens’ 2ndAnnual Golf Tournament will once again benefit the Westbank Boys & Girls Club. Tournament director and Walgreens’ store manager Renell Stewart is just happy to be able to give back. “I’ve been blessed with many great opportunities in my life. I feel it’s my obligation to help organizations like the Boys & Girls Club continue to offer the quality services they provide for our community. I’m delighted that I’m in a position to give back.”

The tournament will be held at the beautiful Stonebridge Golf Course in Gretna on June 25th. Participants can sign up as individual golfers, foursomes, hole sponsors or a combination thereof. All proceeds will go to the club. “I’m really hoping that we get a lot of community involvement in the tournament,” said Westbank Boys & Girls Club director, Michael Grodsky. “It’s provided me a great opportunity to go out to local business owners and community members and tell them about the club. So many people tell me they have fond memories of using our gym when it was a part of Gretna Middle School prior to 1986. Others remember times when the club was located at different facilities in Gretna. I love learning more about the rich history of our club.”

You can help support the Westbank Boys & Girls Club by registering to be a participant or sponsor in the golf tournament online at www.bgcsela.org/golf. Sign up now!

Fifteen year old Thomas Jefferson High School student Ashlyn Pinkins organized a Health Fair at the Westbank Unit on April 29, 2011. Twelve health and safety organizations came out to the fair. Well over a 100 club members and guests from the community attended on the final Friday of the Jefferson Parish Public School’s spring break. Attendees participated in a yoga demonstration by Peter Spera and a karate demonstration by Taekwondo Plus.

Club Director Michael Grodsky was really impressed with the Health Fair. “This was all Ashlyn from start to finish. It was her idea. She approached me about hosting the event. She drafted a proposal for the event, chose a time and date, contacted the community organizations, set up the display tables, organized the logistics of the event and addressed the crowd twice. I’m really proud of Ashlyn. She did a fantastic job.”

Organizations including the American Red Cross, Home Depot, and Fuel Up To Play 60 all had information booths at the fair. “I’m happy that so many organizations came out to promote healthy, safe lifestyles in the community,” said Ashlyn. “This really showed me that I can do anything if I put my mind to it.”
